Eugene's Teaching Philosophy

«Keeping in mind that students come from different backgrounds, levels, interests, and they have unique learning patterns, I developed an individual approach to each person. My intent is to organize lessons the way so the students can develop their skills as efficiently as possible.

Through my 19 years of professional teaching experience, I found that the optimal age to start learning Oboe is around 12 and after. One of the teachers I had an honor to study with, Prof. Ivan Pushechnikov, mentioned once that the kids can start learning oboe even earlier but may face more challenges developing a proper embouchure, blowing through a tiny oboe reed, and dealing with complex fingerings. I agree with Pushechnikov’s method which suggests that the students, whose age is below 12, should start by playing a recorder — that instrument provides a great opportunity for learning the key aspects of playing woodwinds with less effort than the oboe. Children can eventually transfer to oboe once their bodies have matured. As a proponent of this approach, I offer recorder lessons for younger students.

Prior to choosing an optimal learning strategy, we discuss short and long term goals. The short term goals may include work on passing through a youth orchestra, a band audition, being accepted into a high school or college music program, or a solo competition. Regarding the long term goals, I strive to help the students find their own unique sound, become effective problem solvers, and independent thinkers.

Finally, having a good oboe reed is a crucial component of successful oboe playing. My students receive instructions on the process of making quality reeds as well as have access to custom-made reeds for oboe and English horn at a reasonable cost.

Playing music is wonderful and rewarding. I wish to share my knowledge and experience with the younger generation and show them what can be achieved through their individual effort!»
